When the WBTS comes clean, admits the lies, deception, flawed reasoning, etc. then the end of the world will surely come. And since there is about as much chance of that happening as monkeys flying out of my butt, I think I'll keep putting money in my 401K.

Do you think the world will end soon. If so, when?
by Rod P inpredictions for the end of the world have been going on since the time of christ, and in every century since then.
during the past 100 years there have been more predictions for the end of the world than have been made in all the previous centuries combined.
many of these prophesied dates have since come and gone.. people look around and see the possibility of many different natural or man-made disasters by which the end could come.

Some thoughts on saluting the flag.
BD
The Flag of the United States of America
Nothing evokes such strong emotion as seeing the flag, either a ceremony honoring a great event or draped over a coffin as a sign of mourning for a hero or loved one.
Its unfurled banner, which symbolizes the love and pride that we have as a nation, is a poignant reminder of America's greatness and our fortune to live in a country which values freedom above all else. It signifies the commitment made by our fallen comrades who battled bravely to defend the honor of this sacred emblem - our American unity, our power, and our purpose as a nation, and it exemplifies the devotion of our leaders who continue to uphold its promise of liberty, justice and freedom for all.
Our nation reveres the flag, not out of a sense of unquestioning worship but out of a deep sense of our national heritage. Strengthened by our noble deeds, splendid accomplishments, and untold sacrifices, the flag reflects America's pledge to uphold democracy and work for peace throughout the world. It is America's strength in honor, as dignified in the stars and stripes of the flag, which helps to establish the moral character of our national foundation.
The flag, endearingly referred to as "Old Glory," represents all people of America. We, the people, are America. It is little wonder that the people of America are moved when saluting the flag is it passes by, reminding us that we are a part of this great land.

Coming clean about what's been going on lately, I need to talk......
by Jez inwell, my sil and best friend came to this site on my recommendation (jw).
i just wanted her to check it out without judgement as we have always been able to talk about everything.
she basically was disgusted, said it was full of crap and lies and would never look at it again.

Jez,
Even for all of her professed doubts she is still a JW and they hold a special place for those of us that dislike and attack the org. She was okay with your "other" sins (getting remarried, etc) but once she knew how you felt about the WBTS that's it, that's the line for the most of them that you can't cross.
I have seen the same thing with those df'd. One's df'd for adultry, smoking, whatever, many will reach out to them or on the sly maintain a relationship with them. But get df'd for being an apostate or da yourself and that's it, you are dead as far as they are concerned. I think that is what is going on here with your SIL.
I agree with those that said you have to be yourself and let the chips fall.

Jez,
There's not much that I can say that hasn't been said in the last three pages other than my heart goes out to you. Take good care of yourself and grieve for what it appears is lost. We can't control others (though some would like to control us), all you can do is keep being the wonderful person you are and carry on.

I guess I didn't as this was my first discussion board/forum experience and I was cautioned by people not to reveal too much personal info as there were all these freaks on the web that would somehow use it to cause me great injury and distress. And after a couple of months here boy were they right.
All kidding aside all I heard from people that I told that I joined a discussion forum was to be careful, and don't say anything about yourself or what you do, or where you live on and on so I was sort of hesitent to do so. I mean I could see not putting my bank account info in my bio or my social security number, or maybe my telephone number but I kept wondering what sort of harm could come from some biographical info but again I was warned against it. Anyone else have that experience? So far my experience here has been positive and every pm I have recieved has been cool, etc.

Assemblies suck
by Nosferatu indidn't it drive you up the wall how, after a long week of working or going to school, you had to spend your entire weekend at an assembly?
the saturday and sunday that you could've spent catching up on some yard work, or even relaxing was wasted away by sitting in a bunch of chairs, listening to stuff you've heard many times before.. i know this used to drive me up the wall.
it felt like i had absolutely no time to myself during these weekends.

Shania, you know, if my family had done assemblies they yours did and many others that I knew I might not have hated them so much. But my mother was a notorious tightwad so we never stayed at hotels or went out to eat or had any fun associated in anyway with going to the assembly. I also think that my dear mother believed that if you had any fun in connection with the assembly, that somehow reduced your piety, or meant that you were not taking things seriously if you went back to the hotel after a long day at the convention and splashed around the pool.
I have come to realize from reading alot of the posts here that my family made a difficult way of being raised even more difficult by never trying to at least have any fun associated with the JW activities. Had they done that I might not have despised it quite a much as I did, but I can't really associate any fun or happy memories with any of the activities, it was always drugery.

Suicide among Jehovah's Witnesses
by cruzanheart inthis topic has been covered many times, in many different ways, but let's open this for discussion: if the witnesses allowed an elder per congregation to be trained as a "pastoral counselor" as other religions do, would that make it more bearable to be a witness and play by their rules?
would it lessen the number of depressed, suicidal people who feel they have no reason to live?.

I agree with tijkmo, with actual training things would be better, but said training would conflict with their theology and would therefore be incompatable.
As I mentioned in other threads, last year we did home hospice for my dad when he was end stage with a brain tumor. I would sit and listen when the brothers would come by to visit, and when the chaplain (still can't believe my mom was willing to sit and talk with him) would come by. The level of benefit was just night and day, the chaplain was so much better and offered so much more support it wasn't even funny. The evidence of a trained counselor vs. untrained was striking. You don't send a carpet cleaner to try and talk someone down from a bridge when they are ready to jump.
And, after dad died, the chaplain kept coming by, the brothers did not.

AN EXCUSE TO HATE?
by Terry ini ask this question rather seriously.
isn't religion actually an excuse to hate?
you quickly learn us vs them and who is who.
-
Big Dog
It seems to me people don't need much of an excuse to hate, they can hate for just about any reason you can think of. As some have said above, religion can help organize the hate, as can skin color, political party, or just about anything else you can think of.
Why do we hate, what is it in our human nature that causes us to hate? That's what I really would like to know.
